“Rebirth” (Mandela T-Shirt)

“Rebirth” was selected the winner of a nation-wide contest, sponsored by the South African Association of Arts, for the honor to be featured on a WFUNA limited edition art print. From a large pool of works by competing artists representing South Africa’s diverse culture, the work of twelve finalists was presented to the office of Nelson Mandela for selection. The winner was Aleta Michaletos from Pretoria, South Africa, who was flown to New York to be honored at UN Headquarters. “Rebrith” represents the intertwining of two destinies, that of a man and a nation. Three distinct images, symbolizing peace (doves), power (hawk) and hope (Mandela’s image) are interwoven to reflect the “labor pains’ experienced during the birth of a new nation.
